For my friend, whose favourite fairy tale this is, I illustrated the scene where Beauty returns to the beast's palace only to find that he is very ill.
"Oh! Beast, how you frightened me!" she cried. "I never knew how much I loved you until just now, when I feared I was too late to save your life."
