Hiroshige studies

I only just now remembered this community and thought my project would be of interest to some. I've started a series of monochromatic composition studies of the Japanese woodblock printer Hiroshige Utagawa (1797-1858) to improve my eye for compositions and backgrounds.

Have you ever done a study of any professional artists for practice? If so, did it help you?

This is a great idea! I imagine a formal study of a master's work would provide some high quality insight. I should try it sometime, as opposed to my usual tactic of merely staring in awe at artwork I admire. xD

Do you feel you've gotten value from the practice?

I think it's too early to say. For now I'm just copying and trying to get the genereal properotions and values right. I'll report back if I feel like my eye has improved :-)

I haven't done a study per se but I have observed other artist's work and what they tend to do which I feel does help me learn in the long run. For instance, I finally learned why drawing fundamentals help with drawing from imagination thanks to an artist on youtube.

These are nice practice images! I like seeing the progress and I might try out the same thing you are doing and see what happens.
